The selection process for India’s official entry to Oscars 2022 in the Best International Feature Film category has begun. A total of 14 films were shortlisted by the jury members in Kolkata and according to the process, the final one will be selected later.
Two Bollywood films, Vidya Balan's Sherni and Vicky Kaushal's Sardar Udham were selected as official entries for the 94th Academy Awards. Both the films are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Directed by Amit Masurkar, Sherni features Vidya's journey as a forest officer, trying to resolve man-animal conflicts. The film is set in a world full of quirky yet relatable characters, and the plot navigates through her marriage in the midst of her rather unusual job.
The film also stars Sharad Saxena, Mukul Chaddha, Vijay Raaz, Ila Arun, Brijendra Kala and Neeraj Kabi in key roles.
On the other hand, Shoojit Sircar's directorial ‘Sardar Udham’ is based on the life of revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh - played by Vicky Kaushal - a gallant and patriotic man who fought selflessly and courageously against the British subjugation of India. The film’s plot focusses on the assassination of Michael O’Dwyer, the lieutenant governor of Punjab at the time of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.
Sardar Udham also features Shaun Scott, Stephen Hogan, Banita Sandhu, Kirsty Averton and Amol Parashar in pivotal roles. It premiered on Amazon Prime Video on October 16.
Both the movies have impressed the critics and audiences alike, and Vidya and Vicky have been receiving adulation and applause for the portrayal of their respective roles.
Speaking about the 94th Academy Awards, the ceremony will honour the best films that have been released since March 1, 2021. The official ceremony will take place at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on March 27, 2022.
